Why I dreaded every holiday, and what I did about it.

Updating your hours for a holiday takes 1-2 hours. Voicemail rerecording (and you hate the sound of your own voice). Website. Google Maps. Facebook. SMS templates. Door sign. When the holiday ends, do it all again in reverse.

So I'd skip it. Keep my usual hours on Halloween and get home too late for trick-or-treat. When something came up with my kids and it wasn't an emergency, changing my hours and notifying customers felt like more hassle than just toughing it out, so I'd leave at our normal closing time.

I did that for years before I realized the friction of updating hours was making me say no to my own family.
